Key Services Provided in Senior Independent-Living Communities

June 21st, 2022

Seniors move into independent-living communities for multiple reasons, but one of those reasons is the wealth of services that the best of these communities offer to residents. In today’s blog article we would like to talk about which of these services we think are most important.

Food

Food services have to be some of the most important. While residential suites have kitchens, most senior independent-living communities offer one or more professionally prepared meals that are served in a common area.

There are several advantages to having food services. First, the meals are prepared by professionals, which means they are designed for the nutritional and caloric needs of seniors. Second, the ability to eat in a common area with other residents also has a social function. Residents get to interact and enjoy the company of other residents with whom they will have plenty in common.

In addition, as we age, often our sense of taste gets dulled, and our appetites decrease. Having someone else prepare some meals means that the residents may very well eat better than they would if they were unenthusiastically shopping and cooking for themselves.

Activities

Senior independent-living communities should have a full calendar of varied, age-appropriate activities for residents. There will be one or more staff members who make an effort to appeal to all the residents with games, interactive social activities, exercise, and possibly lectures or field trips. Most people are more likely to participate in activities if you make it fun and easy to do so. And staying active, including having social interaction with others, is an important component in physical and mental health.

A Highly Trained Staff

Another important benefit of living in a senior, independent-living community is the highly trained staff that you will find there. Seniors have someone available to call 24/7 in case of emergency, a registered nurse on call, as well as staff who are in tune with their needs and preoccupations. There will also likely be some kind of shuttle service to shopping areas so that driving is not required and other staff members taking care of housekeeping and linens. The whole community and staff will be designed and trained for the health, happiness, satisfaction, and safety of its residents.
