Making New Friends In A Seniors Independent Living Facility

February 26th, 2020

Seniors lucky enough to be in an independent living community in Airdrie or Calgary have a unique opportunity to meet a large number of new people and create new and long-lasting friendships. Being new to an independent living community can be difficult, and it may be tough at first to make new friends, but here are some tips.

Look At The Calendar

Start by taking a look at the calendar and checking out all the different events and activities being offered. Choose some events that pique your interest, as not only will the event itself be fun, but it will contain like-minded individuals with similar interests. This could include going to an exercise class, taking in a performance, joining a book club, or going to a religious gathering.

Greet New People

When you do attend new events, make sure you greet new people and introduce yourself. Overcoming social anxiety in new situations can be difficult for some, but rest assured knowing you are not among in this, and the majority of residents in assisted living are also friendly, happy people excited to make new friends and connections. Ask questions and find out what other activities these new people are interested in.

Be Social During Meals

Eating a meal with people is one of the most social activities we do throughout our lives. When you are in the doing room, take this as a chance to meet and converse with new people. You never know, you might meet your new best friend this way.

Actively taking steps to meet new friends and make new social connections is important for not only happiness, but overall physical health. Friendships helps to ward off depression and is a vital part of life. If you find you are struggling to meet new people, talk to the staff and reach out for help, they will gladly help you connect with new people.
