Tips to Boost Your Immunity

Tips to Boost Your Immunity

December 27th, 2020

Studies have shown that as we age, our immune systems become less effective at naturally fighting off invaders. This can make us more prone to infection and illness—but there is good news! There are several ways in which you can take your health into your own hands and boost your immunity with proactive choices.

Keep The Bad at Bay

In light of current events, the most important recommendations to stay healthy right now are:

-Wash your hands and wear a mask!

Nobody likes masks, but when combined with handwashing, doctors have indicated that it is the best way to keep yourself and others safe.

-Cut Out Smoking

Unsurprisingly, smoking lowers your body’s ability to fight off infection. For help quitting, a simple google search will help you find an enormous number of free resources to help you, from online information and booklets to social media discussions.

-Reduce Or Eliminate Alcohol Consumption

Similar to smoking, alcohol suppresses the immune system, especially in larger amounts. If you choose to imbibe, always do so in moderation.

Invite Good Things to Stay

-Eat Your Veggies

A healthy, balanced diet is probably the biggest way you can provide a boost to your immune system. Elderly citizens tend to eat less, so sometimes multivitamins are advised to supplement vitamin and mineral intake. Follow your doctor’s orders.

-Exercise Regularly

Whether by walking, swimming, biking, or hiking, it’s important to get your heart rate up—even if for just a short time—each day. Cardiovascular health is correlated to your immune response, so a healthy ticker can help fight off infection.

-Get a Good Sleep

When you’re tired, your immune system is tired. If you find yourself tired for no reason, talk to a local sleep clinic to see if there may be some unnoticed reason for poor quality of sleep. If there is something that’s preventing you from getting the best night’s sleep, address the issue and reap the benefits of a properly-rested immune system.

-Don’t Worry, Be Happy

Studies have found multiple links between a positive outlook and a strong immune system. Even if it doesn’t come naturally: practice positivity. Force yourself to look on the bright side. Even if it’s begrudgingly: say something aloud that you are grateful for. A good outlook can be a learned habit, and just like the other recommendations here, inviting this habit into your life will boost your immune response.

A lot of the advice here sounds like things your mom might nag you about, but it turns out, Mom had it right! For a healthy, well-functioning immune system, take a deep breath and remember the mantra: “In with the good… out with the bad.”
